If you ship directly from an e-tailer you can probably save some of those shipping costs.

Crossing borders is expensive. End of story.

I can ship across Canada hundreds of km, but if I want to send a parcel just a few km from my side of Niagara Falls to yours, it costs significantly more. Letters are about twice the price - 54c (I think) versus about $1.10, and there are the usual range of options from expensive to outrageous for shipping parcels. 

oh yeah, just order something online from a store that sells to the states. easy-peasy.
amazon has everything anyway... just sucks for people ordering to canada
