Ok, that last thing was a file / folder access problem, zune just didn't seem to know it failed to sync.

Now I know I am old, and I only know how to tell computers what to do, I don't do well when they try and do shit for me, especially when its not what I want to do at all....

I have huge collection of out of print music in MP3 only format..

so when I tell zune to only look at one folder (making this my entire library as a test), say Bill Monroe 1936-1946, it picks out some of the albums, but when I click on the, say instead of 15 songs, there are only 3 listed. I find this systematically throughout.

I know there is something I don't fundamentally understand, so I REALLY appreciate your patience.

If this is some automatic database failure ? Can I just tell it to add a folder.... I can't be dependent on their database, what about all the old demo albums, and bootlegs (permitted) I have encoded that are not in release ?

It sounds to me like you probably having metadata problems. If your metadata isn't set properly it can cause problems sometimes when the software is trying to organize it. I had a similar problem with a bunch of random internet content I downloaded.

Try editing some of the metadata on some of the tracks that aren't showing up and see if that lets you add them. Right click on one of the files you're having problems with, select properties and then go to details (in Vista at least), check out what info is entered for artist, album, etc., see if it is set to anything useful.

So we're still working with Symantec on creating new Definitions.
Currently this looks like a variant of W32.Spybot.worm.
I decompiled it and it's coming out being controlled by some systems in China.
It also has multiple proxies in just about every country.

This is why you need to keep spyware off your machine.
All those infected machines are fucking up my night.

Thanks again for your time.

Unfortunately like the example I showed, it take 1 album and splits it over 3 with the same cover shown but it 3 links under albums, I'm sure there is a problem with the MetaData, I probably have 1,000 mp3's without correct data, I can't correct them all. Basically I bought the wrong device then ?

So basically, I'm screwed unless I want to edit all these tags.

No, every modern device will do the same thing. If there are punctuation differences, or spelling differences, things will be split.

So basically, I'm screwed unless I want to edit all these tags.

I don't think this is Zune specific, any of the more advanced management software that tries to organize your collection and provide a content rich environment (get album art automagically, etc.) is going to have a problem with this sort of thing.

I'd say that sooner or later you're going to have to deal with this, so you might just want to get it over with.

The good news is it can actually be pretty easy. If you've got albums that are split up you can just drag and drop them together (in the software drag one album onto the other) and the software will edit the corresponding metadata for you. Also you can populate your metadata automatically for items that aren't marked properly by right clicking on the album, selecting "find album info" and following the prompts.

I know this is a pain, but there is really no way around it if you want to use all of the cool features of the Zune. Back in the day this kind of stuff wasn't as fancy so a lot of people didn't bother setting metadata very carefully.

Maybe you would be happier with another player, but once you get your library set up properly I think you'll probably like it a lot better...

Let me know if you need some more help.

Whatever you do don't upgrade to Adobe Reader 9. That was a mistake to deploy at work.
It has some huge issues with the add-on used for viewing PDFs in IE.

Make sure you're running 8.1.3 for the security reasons.
(Open Reader and choose Help > About Adobe Reader #...)

Otherwise I would suggest opening Adobe Reader and go to Edit > Preferences... > Internet.
Uncheck Display PDF in Browsers and then close after it configures Reader.
Then reopen, recheck the box, let it configure and then closer Reader.
Make sure you've done this w/ FF and / or IE closed.
Then try to view a PDF in a browser again.

It depends what you're doing.

Scripting languages all have a purpose or philosophy, and this generally makes them better at some things than others.

For instance if you want to be doing a bunch of text parsing you probably want to use Perl.

Perl can definitely do it, it is an unbelievably flexible language. Wouldn't need to be a wizard per say.

I just hesitate to recommend it for anything other than text because it's so fucking impenetrable in terms of syntax. Why deal with that if you don't already know it...

Shit like this:

while(<>) {
/^(\w+)/;
print $_.',';
