CALGARY - The Alberta government has launched an investigation into how members of the Calgary Flames and their families scored swine flu shots at a special clinic as thousands of people waited in line for the vaccine or were turned away.

Apparently Alberta health services fired a senior member of thier staff over this. I honestly can't believe that people are so upset about all this. Just baffles my mind 'they are no better than us, so why do they get preferrential treatment'. Fucken people.

Okay, time for me to stir up some good old fashioned contraversy in here. This is my response to this whole garbage. I'm thinking of submitting it to the local paper.

I know it's just a sport, and it's just entertainment and these guys should be treated no different than the rest of us, I get that.

BUT, these teams dump a tonne of tax dollars into federal, provincial, and local gov'ts (no doubt helping pay for the vaccine for everyone else). Also, the 'spin off' businesses and the communities benefit huge from professional sports teams. What would happen if the flu went around the whole league and games had to start being cancelled?

Also, let's face it, there isn't anything in North America that dumps more money into charities (including stuff for sick people, especially kids) than professional sports.

The next time you want to bi**h about a hockey player getting preferrential treatment, I suggest you go back and see how many charity events the guy has organized, how many other events he's partaken in and the total amount of dollars that have been raised because of his presence in the community.

If Joe from across the road (just a hypothetical) did half as much charity work as these guys do (I know most of us are swamped just trying to provide for our families) I would have no problem with him jumping the line.

As people, hockey players are no better than anyone else.
As memebers of the community, these guys are head and shoulders above the 'regular Joe' and I'm sorry to say, but they simply ARE more important.

/end rant.

peter maher was talking about it yesterday and he didn't paint quite a class-society picture as you do. The flames association contacted someone from alberta health and set this up way back when flu shots were first recommended and there were no shortages

It just pisses me off because athletes and sports in general have dumped so much money into research for cures to much more important illnesses like AIDS, Cancer, MS, CP, etc.

All they want is to not wait in line.

BTW Alberta isn't doing the same thing as other provinces - they didn't put 'high risk' groups at the head of the line like Ontario has - it's basically a free for all. So it's not like they 'stole' someone else's vaccine that was in a high risk group.

I don't even agree with the vaccine in the first place, and I'm not all panicked to go get it, so maybe that plays into how I feel about the situation, but I just think people are making something out of nothing here. If anything, I hope this whole situation makes people realize that hockey players are stand-up members of thier community who do a hell of a lot of work for everyone living in the area.

A lot of companies in Calgary brought in nurses to vaccinate all of their employees, and their employee's families. I personally know of 2 engineering firms who paid to have a nurse come to their office to vaccinate them. The engineering firm I work for was going to do the exact same thing, but the shortages and restrictions came along the day before we were set to be vaccinated.

I don't thing the Flames did anything wrong honestly.

man, they need better PR people.

they could've went with.. the reason that we had to make sure that this team had their h1n1 shots is because of the number of times that they're going out of the country and the number of areas they visit that have a high number of cases.

I don't think there's much of a difference because of the fact they got it before some people who are considered "high-risk" could.

Really strong game from Price... he needed that, especially with Halak having pulled his groin.

Bruins fans started streaming for the exits with 4 minutes left in a 1 goal game... it was half-empty with a minute left. Right before the B's tied it. Morons.

i'm hoping it will give alzner and/or carlson a shot

apparently morrisonn might draw a suspension - he was on some kind of probation at the end of the season? Never heard of it before now, but the probation had stipulations about him not drawing a major penalty within a certain number of games. wtf?

Finally, Coach Bruce Boudreau was concerned that defenseman Shaone Morrisonn might face a suspension for boarding Kenndal McArdle late in the third period. Morrisonn received five minutes and a game misconduct, but Boudreau revealed that Morrisonn was put on probation at the end of last season and couldn't receive a major penalty in the Capitals' first 15 or 20 games. Boudreau couldn't remember which it was, but obviously that will be key. Morrisonn said he was not aware of the situation.
